Riga: the city with the entourage of the middle ages

Ideal for long weekends and holidays is perhaps Riga. Amazing streets and squares, interesting walks through the old town, tradition and the cool breath of the Gulf of Riga, people speak Russian and can get here very easy. The advantage of traveling in Riga is an opportunity to explore the city area for 3-4 days. The old city center is very compact, and a couple of trips to Jurmala and the village of Pilsrundāle for Rundale Palace only to diversify the experience.

A city on the banks of the Daugava river was founded by the German Bishop albert in 1201. Riga has developed rapidly and has become a major shopping center. At first the city was ruled by the archbishops of Riga and then of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Sweden, and from 1711 to 1918 Riga became part of the Russian Empire. A change of government, the interweaving of traditions and cultures asked the same unique image, which survived until our days.

First visit and acquaintance with Riga

To stay in Riga is definitely in the historical centre, to walk to town hall square with the house of a merchant of the brotherhood of blackheads. The old buildings here are incredibly stylish and freshly restored. There is also a medieval Church – the Church of St. Peter with a height of 123,5 meters with a viewing platform at the Riga panorama. The top offers stunning landscapes – you can see the Daugava river and lovely buildings with red roofs.

One day in this part of the city you can see the main point: the dome square, Riga castle, the presidential residence, the old atmospheric houses “Three brothers”, Liv square and other interesting buildings. Outside the Old town there are streets Elizabetes and Alberta – built there house in art Nouveau style with quirky ornaments, masks and all sorts of decorations.

First night in Riga it is worth noting the unusual visit of the medieval cuisine restaurant “Rozengrals” in the center, on the Rozena street 1.

The place is very loved by local residents and tourists for special atmosphere – at the entrance guests are greeted with people in costumes of the XIII century, and the interior is decorated with huge wine barrels, a 4-meter arches, heavy wooden furniture, elegant Gothic chandeliers with real candles and locking the door.

In the manuscripts from 1293 referred to the local wine cellar, which is considered the oldest in the city. As for the menu, then you can try different specialties according to old recipes: “Favorite salad of Jacques de Molay”, “Onion soup in old French”, which was served in receptions of John Woodville or fish fillets from the king of France Louis XIV.

The second day. The tradition of the medieval aristocracy

On weekends in the dome Cathedral you can listen to organ concerts. Inside is the body designed by German craftsmen in the late nineteenth century. If you have the desire to leave the city, Rundale Palace is a worthy goal.

You can get there by car or by bus with transfers (up to Bauska, then to the village of Pilsrundāle). The countryside here is very picturesque – everywhere, meadows, open space and storks in nests. Among the village’s prose looks original magnificent Palace – the residence of Duke Biron, the favorite of Empress Anna Ioannovna. Stylish French garden, smooth alleys, spacious staterooms, atmospheric chambers immediately take away from Riga in the 18th century.

Walking around the Old town, don’t forget to look at the pleasant bar or the religious establishment Riga Black Magicto taste Riga black balsam. This drink consists of 24 ingredients – St. John’s wort, raspberries, cranberries, ginger and other herbs. And use the famous balm of the end of XVIII century after lunch, or in hot mixes – tea or coffee, you can add it to smoothies, drink liqueur, champagne and white wine. Final: the Baltic sea and gift fever

The famous resort of Jurmala is just a 30-minute drive from the centre of Riga. The wide beach with its fragrant pine trees stretches along holiday villages. In a few hours you can travel by bike the most beautiful places to relax beside the sea. And after returning to Riga, you should go in search of traditional Souvenirs to the Church of St. Peter. Only wonders will not find here! Scarves and gloves with artistic ornament, amber beads and earrings, bottles of healing balm, sweets, live chocolate, delicious cheese with caraway seeds, wooden toys, linen tablecloths and colored glass cocks – the symbol of the city.
